'But because it took so long, I realized, wow, this is something that is a passion.'

As a Haitian immigrant who arrived in the United States at age 8 without speaking English, she faced numerous obstacles, including sleeping on the floor of a relative's home with her mother. However, it was motherhood at a young age that ultimately had the biggest impact on her work ethic. 'What started to shape me was when I became older; because I had kids so young, I just was like, listen, working a 9 to 5 is not gonna be enough for me,' she said.
Marketing and Branding: A Key to Success
When it came to marketing her restaurant, Ula, Duperval faced another challenge. Many people were unfamiliar with Haitian cuisine, so she decided to market the restaurant as Caribbean rather than specifically Haitian. This decision allowed her to attract a wider audience while still catering to the needs of her community. 'A lot of people — when I was doing the research before we opened — I wasn’t able to call it a Haitian cuisine because people don’t know Haitian food,' she said.
The Struggle is Real: Overcoming Financial Challenges
Despite her best efforts, Duperval faced numerous financial challenges when opening Ula. Paychecks bounced, vendor bills went unpaid, and there were moments she was certain she would have to close the restaurant. However, she persevered, relying on her faith and determination to see her through. 'I was ready to close these doors,' she said. 'The struggle is real.'
